The candlestick is carved from lime wood, primed and coated with gesso, which gives the surface its characteristic texture. The warmth emanating from beneath is created by a red undercoat. A shellac primer adds strength to the layers. A distinctive feature of this sculpture is its almost complete coverage with transfer gold / potala. It is this that glimmers from beneath the paint as we delicately rub it in. For this candlestick, we explored the colour palette used in Ukrainian sacred and applied sculpture to convey the solemnity, joy and cosiness that reign in the family home.

The sculpture ‘Guardian of the Earth’ is inspired by the image of an ancient female goddess – a symbol of fertility, abundance and humanity’s unbreakable bond with nature. Its geometric patterns draw on the traditions of the Trypillian culture, where the earth was regarded as the source of life, strength and the continuity of the family line.
The understated form and natural texture emphasise the primal beauty of the figure, which embodies maternal care, protection and harmony with the world.

Trypillian Madonnas: ‘Mistresses of Fertility’
The ‘Mistresses of Fertility’ sculptures are inspired by the image of an ancient goddess who, in the cultures of agricultural peoples, was a symbol of abundance, prosperity and the birth of new life. In the Trypillian tradition, the feminine principle was revered as the source of creation, and the earth as the greatest value and the foundation of well-being.
The soft forms and symbolic ornamentation emphasise the connection with the cycles of nature, the earth’s bounty and the power of motherhood. The sculpture serves as a reminder of humanity’s harmony with nature and of life’s eternal capacity to be reborn.

The Trypillian Madonna ‘Mother of Grain’
The sculpture ‘Mother of Grain’ embodies the ancient image of the goddess of fertility – the guardian of the harvest, abundance and the life-giving power of the earth. In agrarian cultures, grain was a symbol of life, the continuity of the family line and the annual rebirth of nature, whilst the feminine principle personified the ability to give, nurture and multiply.
The sculpture’s ornamentation serves as a reminder of humanity’s sacred connection with the earth and its gifts. ‘Mother of Grain’ is a symbol of generosity, prosperity and deep gratitude to nature, which bestows life from generation to generation.
