The scarf features the work of one of Kherson’s most famous 20th-century artists. Oleksii Shovkunenko was a renowned artist and teacher, after whom the Kherson Art Museum is named. Oleksii Shovkunenko’s body of work includes portraits of Pavlo Tychyna, Yurii Yanovskyi, Maksym Rylskyi, Volodymyr Zabolotnyi and Nataliia Uzhvii. However, the artist is best known for his watercolours, in which he depicted the everyday lives of workers and captured landscapes from various parts of Ukraine. In 1937, Oleksii Shovkunenko won a gold medal at the Paris International Exhibition for his watercolours from the ‘Dniprobud’ series. The painting ‘The Factory is Working’, in which the artist depicted the industrial landscape of Donetsk, was stolen by the Russians from the Kherson Art Museum in the autumn of 2022.
