The ‘Cossack Mamai’ Painting
The famous painting ‘Cossack Mamai’ is part of the golden collection of artistic treasures of Ukrainian culture and is the most renowned work of folk painting from the 18th century.
This subject is unknown in the art of any of our neighbouring Slavic peoples, yet in Ukraine itself, ‘Cossack Mamai’ has been and remains an extremely popular work, becoming a kind of calling card for Ukrainian art.
The painting ‘Cossack Mamai’ features recognisable symbolic attributes that reflect the spirit of the Ukrainian Cossacks, their philosophy of life and national identity. The painting depicts the main elements: a Cossack with a kobza, sitting in a relaxed posture and playing the instrument.This is a symbol of harmony, spirituality, inner peace and wisdom. The horse beside him is a symbol of freedom, strength, loyalty and readiness for battle. The weapon emphasises the Cossack’s warrior nature and his ability to defend his homeland. At the same time, it lies to one side – as a sign of control over power.The tree symbolises life, the strength of the family line, and a connection to the land and traditions. The oak is a sign of strength and longevity. The bottle and glass symbolise the simplicity of life, hospitality and a certain philosophical detachment. The pipe embodies reflection, calm, concentration and life wisdom.
